How To Install Screen Walls

There are many ways to install screen walls & there are just as many material options that can be used. The correct methodology depends on where your home is located & whether temperature & humidity are an issue where you live.

In Texas we have high humidity levels that cause wood framing to expand & contract. Because of this, wood framing is not the best material choice when installing covered patios or screen walls. Aluminum framing is by far the best alternative when building a patio screen enclosure or screen room.

Time needed: 1 day

Install mainframe.

  1. Install the perimeter U channels.

Cut & install 1″x2″ mainframe on house wall or existing posts. Secure U channels with self-tapping hex head Tek screws. Be sure to leave the spline groove exposed for screen attachment later in the process.

  2. Install vertical mainframe.

Install 2″x2″ vertical mainframes. Space them apart to your desired preference however, it is important that vertical spacing does not exceed the width minus 1 inch of the screen roll that will be used later. Absolute precision in vertical mainframe cuts is not important as small indiscretions will be hidden inside of the top & bottom U channel that was installed in step 1.

  3. Secure vertical mainframe.

Secure vertical main frame components inside the top and bottom U channel with self-tapping hex head Tek screws. Remember to secure top and bottom as well as both sides.

  4. Frame door openings.

Install 2″x2″ mainframes on both sides of each door opening. Make sure they are plumb and have enough clearance for your door size. As an example, if you have a 36″ door you will need a 40″ opening. Install 2″x2″ mainframe in this example spaced at exactly 36″.

  5. Install the screen.

Install the screen by cutting each screen panel approx. one inch larger than the actual opening. Starting at the top secure the screen into the channel spline. You can use either round or flat spline to hold the screen in place. Stretch the screen tight while using a roller to secure the screen to the upper and lower U channels as well as the vertical 2″x2″ mainframe.

  6. Inspect your work.

Now that the screen wall has been installed, step back and admire your work. If sections of screen are uneven or sagging remove that portion & stretch the screen to your desired degree of tightness.
